7 Steps to Get Your Brock University Professors’ Attention — In the Right Way

We all know THAT student — the one who shows up late, asks dumb questions because they missed the last week of classes, contributes nothing to the group project, and then obnoxiously and ignorantly tried to speak up in the last week’s class discussion, like that could make up for an entire semester of slacking.

Yes, that student gets their professors’ attention.

But don’t be that student.

Instead, follow these 7 positive steps to be the student who gets the kind of attention that results in A’s, recommendations, and internships.

1. Introduce Yourself

Even if you have nothing to say but your name, say it like a champ and accompany it with a good handshake. After the very first class, if possible.

2. Read the Syllabus

While it is not going to make this year’s Top 10 Books list, it will keep you from asking dumb questions and greatly improve your chances of turning in your work by the deadlines — something professors love.

3. Go to Class

All of them. Even if that syllabus permits a few absences, make sure to never miss a single the first half of the semester, unless you have documented proof that a catastrophic event kept you away — sleeping in does not count, unfortunately.

4. Participate

Never talk when you have nothing to say, never talk over your classmates, and never talk when the professor wants to talk. But! Ask intelligent questions, contribute to class discussions, lead the group project, take notes, etc.

5. Be on Time

You read the syllabus, you knew that research paper was due on November 27th since the first day of class, so turn it in on time. It really is that simple.

6. Build a Personal Connection

Make eye contact, go to your professors’ offices, greet them before or after class regularly, thank them for something specific you learned in their class. They will remember you.

7. Skip the Funny Business

You are better than that. Furthermore, your professors know when you Googled your information the night before the paper was due and they know that you never read the book you wrote your report on. And they are not impressed.

It really is as simple as being friendly and responsible. Even your most intimidating professors are human, and most of them want to help you get the best foundation you can. So be the Brock University student that they remember and recommend.
