Successful Summer Internships for Brock University Students

Brock University students: if you’ve landed a summer internship in your field of study, congratulations! You will be spending your summer learning a lot, and gaining valuable experience. Sometimes, these positions even lead to full-time jobs after graduation, so it’s important to put your best foot forward and make it a successful experience. Here are five tips to ensure your summer internship reaches its full potential.

  1. Be professional.

Many people have preconceived ideas, not just about college students, but millennials in general. This is your chance to prove them wrong by arriving on time every day, dressing professionally, and working hard. When you finish an assignment early, look for other ways to be helpful and ignore the temptation to pull out your phone.

  1. Don’t have unrealistic expectations.

You are an intern, so you will be assigned some menial tasks. You may not feel like you are learning anything from making copies or running for coffee, but you are still rubbing shoulders with those who have the power to offer you employment in the future, so whatever task they give you, do it with a positive attitude.

  1. Keep a log book or journal.

You may be required to write up something if your internship is counting towards credit, but it is also helpful to look back and see what you learned when creating a resume or talking about the experience in a future interview.

  1. Ask for opportunities.

Your supervisors may not know the extent of your ambition unless you tell them. If possible, ask to sit in and observe meetings with higher level employees, or shadow people in different positions. These types of situations allow you to network while learning tips and tricks of the trade.

  1. End on a positive note.

A handwritten note to your superiors and mentors will leave them with a lasting impression, and leave the door open for future possibilities.

A summer internship is a great opportunity for Brock University students, so make the most of it. Even if it turns out it is not what you expected, you still have the chance to learn from the people around you and to use that experience as you move forward with your education as a Brock University student.
