5 Tips to Help Brock University Students Save Money on Their Weekly Food Bill

Every day, or few days, Brock University Students head to the grocery store to buy groceries. Keeping your food costs down is a challenge especially with unpredictable schedules. Here are some tips for saving money at the grocery store.

  • Prepare a weekly menu. Deciding what you will purchase before you walk into the store, allows for smart decisions. If you are having three dinners that require chicken, buying in bulk makes sense. Which leads to the next tip…
  • Buy in bulk. The more you buy, the more you save per unit. What does this mean? Because companies are spending less money on packaging, they are passing along the savings to you. Buying “family packs” or “value packs” can yield you great savings in the long run. If you are not able to use it all in one week, freeze any remaining items. Think about purchasing meats, fruit or even bread.
  • Buy Frozen. Purchasing frozen items like vegetables or meats gives you more time to use the items and therefore waste less. Stay clear of processed frozen items like dinners or appetizers. For the cost of those items, you are better off making them yourself.
  • Think Meatless. As you prepare your weekly menu, meals that are meatless cost less. This does not mean you need to sacrifice nutrition or taste. Some great ideas are a baked potato bar or vegetarian chili. Get creative.
  • Coupons. Yes, we have all seen these people on TV but the savings are real. Don’t be afraid to ask if your store takes competitors coupons. Also, try matching coupons with ongoing sales increasing your savings on items.
